Powder Puff Dune Buggy Outing

By Tedi Peck

February 22, 2001

I had the idea for a 'ladies only' dune buggy...mostly to get the gals driving and building up their confidence. I also thought it's one way to get something fun going...exciting and different..didn't know if I'd have much interest...but we had lots of interest. We had six buggies go. I reminded them to keep track of the buggy behind them..I promised them a slow and easy run.We started out, excitement was high.I had Sue Nace and Mary Schipper with me. It was the first buggy ride for both of them...they loved it. Behind me was Karen Willard with Allene Schilder as her companion. She is a fairly new driver and did a great job..her's was the only buggy without a CB radio and on one hill I said "everyone wait while I check it out". Of course Karen didn't hear me and just followed me right up...So the others said, " if Karen did it, we can too." So away we all went on. Behind Karen was Marian Thistle and her passenger Vera Wright. Terry Bumgardner and Linda Jones, Then LaVonne Brekhus driving a full buggy with Marge Skites, Aileen Kultti, and Elizabeth Bryan. Suzanne Hong and Marjorie Smith brought up the rear as "Shotgun". The ride was easy and we moved slow...We stopped on a beautiful hillside overlooking the valley. We sat in a big circle to eat our lunch. Spirits were high and lots of giggling. Den Peck was approaching in the CUB, so the suggestion was made to "MOON" him. I'll never tell those who actually did. But it was fun and a nice surprize when den dropped two boxes containing Donuts...Parachutes were attached to the boxes which helped them fall easier..The donuts were in great shape and enjoyed by all. We headed back home..but they said the ride was to short and didn't want to go home..That's when we all decided to run the trail backwards...We found a road which I knew lead to the overview of Hope. It was tricky and I was surprised when they all seemed to enjoy the challenge...Terry had a little trouble on one hill...so Linda took over the driving and along they came. I was real proud of these gals. This section was very challenging for most of them..some scary parts..but they followed their fearless leader. We got to the summit and enjoyed the overview..also the wild flowers, cactus and even some suspicious "tracks". On the return down the hill, LaVonne's new green buggy stalled and even with us pushing, it wouldn't start. (Running and pushing that machine was a real feat for some of us old broads). We decided that four buggies would return home for help...Which we did and Den and Clifford drove out in the Bronco...They brought gas! Turns out that was just what it needed..Bill Jones flew overhead to direct us on the return. We all returned home safely and decided it was fun adventure. Just enough excitement and free spiriting to make us want to do it again.Oh dear, what are these husbands going to say that!! Thanks to all 15 who went along and Den, Ed, and Bill for the flights!
